An art that is intimate, restrained to the extreme, open to the invisible. Whether working in two dimensions (creations on canvas or on paper) or three (artist books, sculptures, public art), Claude CHAUSSARD remains true to the same approach: the medium determines his itinerary.. The artist calls our attention to the moment, the ephemeral. Mastered and finely honed technique yields a language, a grammar, in which all things are always "in the process of...". Of effacing themselves, of undergoing change, of developing, of enduring. As it did in Vasari's time, silverpoint tarnishes from grey to bronze; exposed to light, linseed oil takes on color, while shadow erases it. And though Chaussard engages time and the unpredictable as the principal instruments of his work, he banishes the arbitrary from its execution. When he plucks the string that strikes a surface to project a line of chalk, he does so with the precision and concentration of an archer releasing his arrow.
